Freshman 141-pounder Darrion Caldwell advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships with a pair of victories on the opening day of the event in Detroit, Mich.
Caldwell, who improved to 20-4 on the season and now has won six matches in a row and 13 of his last 14, defeated eighth-seeded Andy Simmons of Michigan State by injury default to move into the quarterfinal round on Friday morning. Earlier in the day, Caldwell pinned Kenneth Hashimoto of Northern Colorado and took just 28 seconds before putting Hashimoto on his back with a cradle move. The pin was Caldwell’s 10th of the season.
Caldwell will face top seed and No. 1-ranked Ryan Lang of Northwestern in the quarterfinals on Friday. Caldwell wrestled Lang back on November 18 in Chapel Hill and lost 7-3.
